He was predeceased by: his daughter Nancy Sue Moore; his parents, Cleopas Smith and Nannie Smith; and his siblings, Bill, Calvin Smith, Marian Wingo, Elinor F. Easter, Olney Underwood, Cleora Windsor and Gaynelle Knox.
He is survived by: his wife Lula Easter Smith; his sons, James R. Smith Jr. and Alvin Easter Smith; and his siblings, Mary Helen Cooke and Robert "Pete" Smith. He is also survived by ten grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.
