He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Willard Hockaday and Lorene Hockaday; his former wife Lois Hockaday; his brother Billy Hockaday; his great grandchild Evan William Vaughn; his wife Denna Hockaday of Tulia; his children, Connie Fontaine of San Jose, Bill (Linda Hockaday), John Hockaday of Rogue River, Donna (Teddy Zurilgen), Joe Hockaday, Jr. of Dalhart and Gina (Jason Grove); his stepchildren, Danna Keeter of Tulia, Jeff, Connie Hannah of Phoenix, Kim, Ty Rogers of Oklahoma City and Sherry Hannah of Las Vegas; and his sister Bessie Calibrese of Pembroke Pine. He was also cherished by 30 grandchildren, 48 Great grandchildren and 1 great, great grandchild.
