He was predeceased by: his parents, James Earnest Smith and Pauline Anderson Smith; his wife Willie Mae Smith; his sisters, Opal Slack and Flo Wilson; and his grandson Tyler Winfree.

He is survived by: his children, Dale G. Smith Jr. of Castle Rock, CO, James Smith (Barbara) of Nacogdoches and Glenda Turner (Bob) of Silsbee; his siblings, Tilman Smith of Mauriceville and Peggy Cantrell of San Antonio; and his grandchildren, Lisa Bondurant, Brad Smith, Brent Smith, Rob Turner, Josh Turner, Mandi Koons and Dustin Turner. He is also survived by 14 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.
