He is survived by: his mother Joyce Gustavson of Bennington, Vermont; his close friend Lupe White of Oglesby; his son Mikel Bates (Jennifer); his grandchildren, Jase of Franklin, TX and Lilly Bates of Franklin, TX; his daughter Erica Bates (James Schoenrock) of West, TX; and his siblings, Dusty Bates (Dawn), Kris Bates (Sandy), Lee Bates (Marietta), Leo Bates, Joyce Bates, Jenny Wulff (Robert) and Ava Shorey (James). He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
