He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Richard Thomas Swopes, Sr. and Mary Frances (Potter); his wife Sandra "Sandy" Swopes of Hereford; his children, John Paul Swopes (Mary) of Lindsay, CA, Richard Thomas Swopes III of Clayton, NM and Julie Kathleen O'Brien (James "Rusty" Cornelius) of Amarillo; and his siblings, Clay Hoag of Fallbrook, CA, Virginia Swopes of Merced, CA. and Debi Womack (James) of Oregon. He was also cherished by 17 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.
