He was predeceased by: his parents, Wes Smith and Lena Lucille McKellar Smith; his daughter Kelly Richardson; and his brothers, Larry Smith and Sonny Womble.

He is survived by: his wife Paula Ann Jones; his daughters, Dena Mayfield (Ricky), Mary Ann Tant (Chuck) and Sandra Thur (Marc); his son-in-law Bennie Richardson; and his siblings, Martha Dell Smith and Neal Griffin.
