He is survived by: his wife Mary Hughes of Clyde, Texas; his children, James Aaron Short of Abilene, Texas, Dinah Gail Stanton of Hereford and Rhonda Lee Short of Midland, Texas; his sisters, Jody Ryen of Ruidoso Downs, Brenda Brooks of Ruidoso Downs, Linda White of Hereford, Carolyn Wheeler of Wichita Falls and Cynthie Sparks of Boys Ranch, Texas; and his sisters-in-law, Tina Hughes of Abilene, Texas and Tammy Thurman of Abilene, Texas. He is also survived by two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
