He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Kenneth Billy Cates and Ella Dora Cates (Arquette); his granddaughter Rebecca Abshere; his wife Ruth Cates; his children, Rachel Evans, Billy Cates, James Cates, Glenda Abshere (Ernie), Jesse Cates, Ella Cates and Jo Lynn Cates; and his siblings, Robert Cates and Barbara Teeters. He was also cherished by 18 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.
