He was predeceased by: his wife Joyce Jean Van Matre; his brother Ivester Lee Van Matre; and his close friend Ruby Ricketson. He is survived by: his children, Deborah Bulsterbaum, Steven Van Matre, Susan Wells and David Van Matre; his grandchildren, Leslie Reta-Smith, Ryan Wells and Jessica Skeen; his great grandchildren, Makayla Reta-Smith, Jaiden Wells, Anthony Skeen and Tyler Skeen; and his brothers, J. D. Van Matre and Benny Van Matre.
