It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Laverne Powell of Brookeland, Texas, born in Orange, Texas, who passed away on July 3, 2022, at the age of 95, leaving to mourn family and friends. She was predeceased by: her parents, Travis M. Ellis and Ora Mae Ellis; her husband Elbert Powell; her son-in-law Jimmy D. Martin; her siblings, Donald R. Ellis, T. M. Ellis, Jr., Cecil E. Ellis, Ruby Scarborough, Margie Powell and Wanda Singleton; and her grandsons, Larry Read and Derick Martin.
She is survived by: her children, Kenneth E. Powell (Charlotte) of Missouri City, Texas, Linda Read (Ronald) of Brookeland, TX and Glenda Martin of Jasper, Texas; her grandchildren, Jason Powell (Glenda) of Missouri City, Vanessa Calvert (Stephen), Kim Simmons (Tim) of Huntsville, Leigh Sargent (Chad) of St. Charles, MO and Duane Martin of Jasper, Texas; and her siblings, Charles J. Ellis (Christine) of Jasper, Annie Merle Roebuck of Brookeland, Norma M. Sisney of Porter and Sam H. Ellis (Dorothy) of Brookeland, Texas. She is also survived by twenty-one great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
