He was predeceased by: his parents, Luis Lara and Ernestina Moreno Lara; his brothers, Luis "Vichy" Lara, Leopoldo "Polo" Lara and Leovigildo "Leo" Lara; and his grandson Jason Scott Rodriguez.
He is survived by: his children, Larry Lara (Elizabeth Montalvo Lara), LaNelle Lara (Carlos Rodriguez), Lonnie Lara (Becky Pallanez Lara) and Lorinda Gonzales (Gilbert Gonzalez); and his grandchild Lu Lara-Valdez. He is also survived by his thirteen grandchildren, twenty-one great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
