He was predeceased by: his parents, Charles William Austin and Sarabeth Jernigan Austin. He is survived by: his wife Joy Helton Austin; his daughters, Amber McDowell (Jason), A. J. Wood (Rusty) and Katy Smith (Christopher); his grandson Reed Wood; his siblings, Bill Austin (Marilyn), Martha White (Benton) and Vera Phelan (Ed); and his sister-in-law Jackie Appleton (Ray). He is also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews.
John also managed Reed's school when in-person classes were shut down because of COVID.
