He was predeceased by: his parents, George Schmidt and Vina Schmidt (Harvey); his wife Lorene; his sisters, Hazel, Helen Schmidt and Ruthie Christensen; and his great grandchild Elijah Murphy.
He is survived by: his children, Rocky Schmidt (Bonnie) of Buffalo, SD, Kathy Smith (Red), Ricky Schmidt (Tami), Tami Fischer (Curt) and Rusty Schmidt (Rhonda); and his siblings, Doris Mitchell of Washington, Howard of Arizona, George and Leland of North Dakota. He is also survived by twenty-three grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
