He was predeceased by: his wife Linda Diane Barnes Atkins of Pickens; his parents, Luther Durant and Carrie Louise Porter Atkins; his son Jamie Atkins; and his brother Phillip Atkins.

He is survived by: his children, Joey Atkins of Pickens and Janet Ivey (Mike) of Cramerton, NC; his grandchildren, Kaitlyn Ivey and Caleb Ivey; and his siblings, Dola Mae Chappell of Easley, Linda Masters of Pickens, Martha Hawkins (Billy) of Easley, Janice Atkins of Pickens, Rachel Durham (Stanley) of Pickens and Dan Atkins (Judy) of Marietta. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews.
