He was predeceased by: his parents, Roy Whelchel and Nettie Gregory Whelchel; and his brothers-in-law, Earl McAbee and Buddy Fowler. He is survived by: his siblings, Wendell Whelchel (Jan) of Gaffney, Jimmy Whelchel (Susan) of Gaffney, Shirley McAbee of Gaffney and Elaine Fowler of Gaffney. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
