He was predeceased by: his parents, James Clifford Metts and Lucille Metts Epting; and his brother Phillip D. Metts. He is survived by: his wife Phyllis S. Metts; his children, James E. Metts, Jr. (Lauren) of Ballentine and Susan "Dennie" Bedenbaugh (Todd) of Prosperity; his grandchildren, Madison Metts, Corey Bedenbaugh and Jay Metts; his nephew Gabe Metts; and his niece Morgan Straws.
