He was predeceased by: his parents, Manuel Alves and Maria Alves (Carveiro). He is survived by: his wife Linda E. Valentine (Potvin); his children, Jose Alves of Washington State, William Valentine of Smithfield and Celina Valentine of Pascoag; and his siblings, Helena Santo, Fernanda Casey and Isaura Alves. He is also survived by five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
