He was predeceased by: his parents, Arthur Irwin and Agnes Powers Irwin; his wife Belinda Irwin (McHale); his daughter Ann Marie Irwin Galgan; and his sisters, Loretta Waterman and Carol Perrier.

He is survived by: his children, Belinda Irwin of Pittston and John Joseph Irwin (Helen) of Tobyhanna; his grandchildren, John Philip Borisuck, Bobby Galgan, Shane Borisuck, John Joe Irwin, Ciaran Irwin and Mary Irwin; and his siblings, William Irwin, James Irwin and Gail Bohmer. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
