He was predeceased by: his parents, Kenneth W. Ernst and Esther I. Ernst (Lowans); and his siblings, Doris Hunsberger, Edward Ernst and Ronald Ernst.

He is survived by: his wife Joyce E. Ernst (Divelbiss); his daughters, Billie Jo Gehr (Joe) of Mercersburg and Becky Funk (Mitch) of Mercersburg; his grandchildren, Tyler Funk (Taylor), Tanner Funk (Lydia), Jessica Carter (Ty) and Josh Gehr (Kayla); his great grandchildren, Lexi and Remi Carter; and his sister Linda Kriner of Clear Spring, MD..
