She was predeceased by: her parents, Joseph Kostalansky and Helen Hega Kostalansky; and her husband Chester Dera.

“Char is my friend. She taught me about bald eagles, and she patiently waited as I asked question after question over the years. I don't know everything about my friend, Char, however she showed me the essence of her passion and thru her I learned of her compassion for others. We'd talk for hours at a time. Boy did we love fresh fruit. She is in my heart forever, I miss her, and she'll be with me always.”
