He is survived by: his wife Phyllis Elane Taylor; his children, Stephen Bates (Sarah) of Colleyville, Texas and Leslie Benda of Forney; his grandchildren, Brandon Bates, Blake Bates, Emma Bates Raegan Benda and Elise Benda; and his brother Reve Bates of Panama, Oklahoma..
