Ina Mae McCune Obituary
She was born to Lois Mae (Miller) and Sidney Earl Ferguson in Boise City, Oklahoma and departed from this earth in Stroud, Oklahoma, where she resided since February of 2017.
Several days after graduating from Boise City High School in 1949 as valedictorian of her class, she married the love of her life, Alton McCune, on May 29, 1949. They were married 71 years at the time of Alton's death on July 5, 2020. She learned about being a wife and mother during the early years of their marriage as they lived in the panhandle of Texas, and eight children were later born to their union. When they moved to Boise City and Alton established his home construction business, she assisted him as she could with that as well.
Ina was a quiet, gentle, unassuming, meticulous, hard-working and patient woman who attended to whatever task that was put before her with great detail and attention, completing it to the best of her ability. She proved this daily by raising their eight children and managing a household while working full-time. Ina began her work career early as a dishwasher in a restaurant, progressing later as her skills developed to working at the local abstract office. She settled into her career, however, and became quite depended upon when she became secretary for the First Baptist Church of Boise City – a job from which she retired after 35 years of faithful service. Ina may be most remembered during her years at the church for establishing the church library. She spent countless hours cataloguing and setting up a "proper" library room with hundreds of volumes of books and other types of media available to support the needs of church patrons. She was always available to serve her church and her Lord in any way she could.
Once she retired, she had a little more time for pleasure activities such as quilting, genealogy, and travel. She couldn't get completely away from work, however, and began proofreading for the Boise City News. Ina and Alton also became involved as Board members with the Cimarron Heritage Center. Alton restored antique vehicles and tractors, and Ina assisted in some aspects of that as well. Her specialty, however, was upholstery recovery, and she restored seats on at least one buggy and a car for the museum. The standard by which both of these individuals lived their lives was, "If the job is worth doing, it is worth doing right," and their work reflected that. They instilled into each of their children a proper work ethic that has also served them well through their lives.
Ina is preceded in death by her husband Alton, parents Earl and Lois Ferguson, her only brother Lorel Dee Ferguson and his son Tommy, and one grandson, Tekon LeJay McCune. She is survived by her eight children: Gary (and Yolanda) of Stillwater, OK; Larry (and Kathey) of Avery, TX; Terry (and Carol) of Rush, CO; Anita Wright (and Philip) of Stroud, OK; Ed of Marshfield, MO; Rick of Vallecito, CO; Rita Mumma (and Mark) of Oklahoma City, OK; and Troy (and Leah) of Houston, TX. The twenty grandchildren surviving are: Tyran McCune (and Audrey); Trayton McCune (and Joy); Stephanie (McCune) Brady and Rickey; Brandy Johnston; Courtney McCune; Jennifer Herald (and Josh); Kristopher McCune (and Brooke); Karami Rice; Melanie (McCune) Strickland (and Kevin); Michael Murphy (and Tammy); Steven Murphy; Gaylen Murphy (and Dolly); Billy Wright (and Kristi); Kaylyn McCune (and Brad); Brady McCune (and Katie); Mitchell Mumma (and Renee); Zachary Mumma (and Bethany); Grace Mercer (and Rafael); Brittany McCune; and Josh McCune. She leaves as well 32 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great- grandchildren, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of other relatives and friends. Also surviving are her sisters: Leta Almeda of Gibralter, Europe; Reba McBride of Oklahoma City, OK; and Kimmie Simmons of League City, TX.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Boise City.
