He was predeceased by: his parents, William Anthony and Axelene Schafer, Sr. (White); his wife Esther M. "Pat" Schaefer RN (Haubert); his children, Cindy Lou Schaefer, Christine Marie Vodicka (Schaefer), Joseph P. Schaefer (ChFC) and Reid R.; and his siblings, Mary Jean Schaefer-Jordan (Ray), William A. Schaefer, Jr. (Gladys) and Robert W. Schaefer (JoAnne).
He is survived by: his children, John Gary Schaefer (Deborah), ChFC PhD, Paul J. Schaefer (Charmaine), Dr. Peter L. Schaefer D. D. S. and Thomas G. Schaefer (LaDonna); his grandchildren, Tamara K. Schaefer-McPeek (Todd), Jennifer L. Schaefer-Pribanic (Adam), Neal Schaefer (Lydia), Jessica Schaefer-Duncan (Alex), John R. Schaefer (Angela), Patricia Schaefer-Melton (Tim), Crystal Schaefer, Cory Schaefer, Nathan Schaefer, Natalie Schaefer-McVicker (Nate), Nina Schaefer, Carson Schaefer, Paige Schaefer and Carter Schaefer; his great grandchildren, Toddy, Taylor McPeek, Thea Schaefer, Willow Schaefer, Ivy Duncan, Dean Duncan, Abigail Pribanic-Geiselhart (Eric), Jacob Pribanic, Esme McVicker, Kendal and Myles Melton; and his sister Kathleen Wiesler (late Paul). He is also survived by his nieces and nephews.
