He was predeceased by: his parents, John Thomas Smith and Mary Olive Smith (Adkins); his wife Deloris J. Smith (Stapleton); and his siblings, Helen Anderson, Betty Kemper, Theda Lederer, Ken, Gary and Leroy Smith.

He is survived by: his children, Sherry Yankie, Michael Smith and Thomas Smith (Donna); his grandchildren, James, Joseph, Mathew and Caitlin; his great grandchildren, Jordan, Joey Jr., Mikayla Rose, John Thomas "Jack", Olivia and Lillie; and his sisters, Carolyn Bradley and Shelby Hagan.
