He was predeceased by: his parents, William Hites and Fannie Hites (White); his former wife Barbara Hites; his sister Faye Bard; his half-brother Robert Cowles; and his stepdaughter Shannon Sprankle.

He is survived by: his wife Linda (Sprankle); his sons, Thomas Hites (Marsha), Brian Hites, Gerald Hites (Amy) and Mike Horvath (Shelly); his stepchildren, Bryan Sprankle (Shari), Shirley Slemc (Frank) and Wendy Lengyel (Mike); his sister Barbara Gast; and his stepsiblings, Raymond Cowles, Russell Cowles, Richard Cowles, David Cowles and Susan Mack (Donald). He is also survived by twenty-one grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
