He was predeceased by: his parents, Harlen Wimsatt and Mildred Thompson Wimsatt; his stepson Jeff Slaughter; and his brothers, Tom and Joe "Bub" Wimsatt.
He is survived by: his wife Jean Allen Wimsatt; his son Jim Wimsatt II of Westerville, OH; his grandchildren, Lauren, Addison, Samuel Wimsatt, Jeffrey and Rhys Slaughter; his great grandchild Jayden James Slaughter; his stepdaughter-in-law Stacey Slaughter of Florida; his siblings-in-law, Janice and David Hanes of Caldwell; and his nieces, Theresa Becker and Jean Hill. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and friends.
