He was predeceased by: his siblings, Marion Plott, Elizabeth Coyne, Patricia Coyne, Mary Margaret Hock (Peggy), James Coyne and Joseph Coyne.
He is survived by: his brothers, Thomas Coyne of Nottingham, MD and Francis R. Coyne of Baltimore, MD.. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.
He left the post of director of the Vatican Observatory in August 2006, but continued to be part of the Vatican Observatory staff and served as president of the Vatican Observatory Foundation until 2011.
