He was predeceased by: his parents, William "Lester" and Marjorie Matthews (Doty); his son Thomas J. Matthews; and his brother Charles "Chuck" Matthews. He is survived by: his wife Ann Matthews (Morse); his daughter Judy Lloyd; his son-in-law Ted Lloyd; and his granddaughter Emmy Lloyd.

“Ann, so sorry to hear about Bill’s passing. Over 20 years, it was inevitable that we had some good and difficult adventures together. I continue to appreciate and cherish the people i had the privilege to work with at oneida and Bill was a big part of that. Val and i were visiting cape cod on november 21 ( my birthday) and i mentioned that i thought you and bill had a place in Chatham. Life’s never ending connection. Ann be well and our thoughts are with you Glenn and valerie kelsey”
