He was predeceased by: his parents, Louis Avena and Eugenia "Jenny" Avena (Bertolla); his wife Irene; and his brother Daniel J. Avena. He is survived by: his daughters, Teresa Shindel (Richard) and Beverly DiMatteo (Jeffrey); his grandchildren, Tammie Biagi (Nicholas), Carissa Shindel, Dana DiMatteo, Richard Shindel and Jaime DiMatteo; his great grandchildren, Ava, Liliana and Dante Biagi; his son Edward L. Avena, Jr. (Trisha); his grandchildren, Logan Avena and Madison Avena; his siblings-in-law, Angelina Avena (Daniel), Felix Girone (Janice), Nicholas Girone (Judy) and Joseph Girone (Elaine); and his pet Ed's. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
