James Murphy Obituary

April 2, 1952 - May 11, 2018 James Francis Murphy died on Friday, May 11, 2018. He was 66. Born in Jersey City, he lived in Rockaway for most of his life. Mr. Murphy worked for the United States Postal Service and retired after 40 years. Jim attended Stonybrook University in New York on a basketball scholarship and basketball remained a huge part of his life.

He was so proud of his children and some of his happiest times were watching Eric's various games over the years. Jim loved dogs, going to the racetrack, and could always be seen walking around Rockaway. He enjoyed birdwatching and maintaining his bird feeders, but had quite the rivalry with the squirrels. He is survived by his wife: Ann; two children, Kellie Branca and Eric Murphy; a sister, Peggy Murphy; and his grandchildren, Lennon and Aspen Branca, and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, May 19 from 1:00 – 4:00 PM at the Whitham - Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Avenue, Rockaway. Jim would have preferred no flowers, but rather you honor his memory by doing something special with your family.
