He was predeceased by: his parents, Richard Smith and Elizabeth Smith (Stevens); and his brother-in-law Steve Schmid. He is survived by: his sons, Dustin of David City, Casey Brandl of David City and Devin of David City; his grandchildren, Kaydance and Maverick; and his siblings, Darlene Tannehill (Jim) of Norfolk, Demaris Smith of David City, Diane Schmid of Ottumwa, Richard Smith (Debbie) of San Diego, Don Smith of San Diego, Dale Smith of Santee and Dave Smith of David City.
