He was predeceased by: his parents, Fred Schaffer and Christine Schaffer (Schlauger); his wife Shirley Kuxhaus; his sisters, Helen (Adolf Bastron), Eileen (Marvin Pierce) and Lavonne (Leonard Ott); and his siblings-in-law, Jodene and Harvey Heintz.
He is survived by: his son Walter Schaffer (Crys) of Bayard; his grandsons, Wade Schaffer (Tami) of Scottsbluff and Gabriel Schaffer (Andrea) of Gering; his great grandchild Cole Schaffer (McKayla) of Bayard; his stepgrandchildren, Christine Lattin (Darren), Livingston and John Leisy (Erica); and his sister Lucille "Sally" Heintz of Kansas City, KS. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Memorials may be given to Chimney Rock Villa in Bayard.
