He was predeceased by: his parents, Paul Messner and Olga Messner (Standal); his sister Donna Hagle-Hoffhine; and his parents-in-law, Jerry and Verna Westby.

He is survived by: his wife Lori Messner of Binford, ND; his son Gregory Messner of Seattle, WA; and his siblings, Paul Messner, Jr. (Vicki) of Bismarck, ND and Judy Black (Kevin) of Glenfield, ND..
