He was predeceased by: his parents, Mary "Ham" Bunch and James Nowell. He is survived by: his close friend Brenda Kent of Greenville, NC; his son Gerod Ruffin (Shameka) of Clayton, NC; his grandson Christian Ruffin; his daughter Nicole Nowell; and his siblings, Mary "Kate" Watford of Ahoskie, NC, Marvin "Tang" Nowell (Caron) of Charlotte, NC and Darrie Nowell (Michele) of Phoenix. He is also survived by his nieces, nephews; a host of other relatives and friends.
