She was predeceased by: her parents, Cash Penland and Kathleen Eppley Penland; and her husband Reverend Alcy "Junior" Kates, Jr.. She is survived by: her son Carroll James Kates (Carol) of Cumming, Georgia; her brother Doug Penland; her grandchildren, Davin (Teresa) and Jana Kates; and her great grandchildren, Tyler and Sarah Kates. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
