He was predeceased by: his parents, Baxter Hicks Harwell, Sr. and Lacy Rankin Harwell; and his brothers, Rev. Lacy Harwell, Judge B. Hicks Harwell, Jr. and Judge David W. Harwell.
He is survived by: his siblings, Anne Harwell Hill of Midlothian and James R. Harwell of Florence, SC. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
