It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Hazel Lanning (Waynesville, North Carolina), born in Jackson, North Carolina, who passed away on January 2, 2020, at the age of 91, leaving to mourn family and friends. She was predeceased by: her parents, Lawrence Kilby and Lura Wyatt Kilby; her husband James W. Lanning; her granddaughter Kristy Lanning; and her brothers, Luther, John and Joe Kilby.

She is survived by: her children, Jackie Lanning of Waynesville, Richard W. Lanning (Jynks) of Canton, Charlie Lanning (Sharon) of Waynesville and Jim Lanning (Vickey) of Waynesville; her sisters, Helen Greene of Candler, Elizabeth Balding of Candler, Linda Clark of Waynesville, Marie Sharp (Cecil) of Waynesville, Cora Browning of Waynesville and Nora Mashburn (Joe) of Waynesville; her sisters-in-law, Johnnie Ruth Kilby of Waynesville, Ella Mae Lanning of Sylva, Wilma Crawford of Waynesville and Jewel Kilby of Florida; and her grandchildren, Tina Sloan (Scott), Brek Lanning, Brian Lanning, Rebecca Mashburn (Jay), Scott Lanning (Sarah) and Abby Landry (Jonathan). She is also survived by twelve great-grandchildren.

“Hazel was always a Beautiful, Sweet, Kind and Loving Person. She helped make my childhood a happy one. She was like her mom, my Great Aunt Lura. The sweetest, kindest people you would want to meet. I stayed at Aunt Lura and Uncle Lawerance's every chance I got. Hazel and James lived on the hill above them . Oh the Happy Memories. My heart felt condolences to all the family. Love to all of you.
