He was predeceased by: his parent Texie Lowery McKinney; his grandmother Mary; his siblings, John Lewis McKinney, Lois Nell McKinney and Kelly Wade McKinney; his stepson Tommy Shuck; his former wives, Barbara Mace McKinney and Eva Meredith McKinney; and his wife Brenda Vaughn West McKinney.
He is survived by: his children, Mary McKinney (Jody Prevette) of Boone and Matt McKinney of Spruce Pine, NC; his grandchildren, Brooke Penley of Deep Gap, NC, Seleste Penley of Swannanoa, NC, Dylan McKinney and Hayden Owens of Spruce Pine, NC; his brother Jerry McKinney of Newland, NC; his niece Debbie McKinney of Spruce Pine, NC; and his stepdaughters, Vickie Kirk (Danny) of Lenoir, NC, Lisa Woody (Steve) and Holly Samples (Jonathan) of Kingsport. He is also survived by several step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, and many cousins.
