He was predeceased by: his parents, Wilbur Ray and Lucille Carter Merritt; and his siblings, Gail Merritt, Sue Bailey, Wilbur Merritt and Clee Merritt.
He is survived by: his wife Angie Merritt of Roanoke Rapids; his brothers, Roy Merritt of Wilmington, NC, James Merritt of Burgaw, NC and Steve Merritt of Leland, NC; his sons, Paul Merritt of Austin Texas and John M. Merritt of Virginia Beach, VA; and his stepson Geoffrey Harrington of Benson, NC. He is also survived by seven grandchildren.
