He is survived by: his wife Caroline Howell Hayes; his son William Thomas Hayes, Jr.; his grandchildren, Meredith Nolte (Seth) of Cheyenne, Rachael Curry (Jacob), Trae Hayes of North Wilkesboro, Hannah Spivey (Josh) and Noah Hayes of Raleigh; and his siblings, Mary Sue Parsons and Raymond Hayes.
