He was predeceased by: his parents, Wade Elmore and Ruby Lee Richardson Shumate. He is survived by: his son William Shumate of Pensacola, Florida; his grandson Cooper Shumate of Pensacola, Florida; and his brothers, Vernon Ray Shumate (Patsy) of Laurel Springs and Reid Shumate (Steva) of North Wilkesboro. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family has requested no flowers, memorials may be made to Bible Way Baptist Church, PO Box 185, Wilkesboro, NC 28697.
