He was predeceased by: his father Chester M. Meares Jr.; and his wife Margaret A. Meares. He is survived by: his mother Jewell K. Meares of Newport; his close friend Irma "Jane" Beddow Taylor; his sister Emily McLaurin (Tim) of Morehead City; his stepdaughter Tonya Carter (Jeffrey) of Hillsborough; his stepgrandchildren, Kenneth Thompson Jr., Chris Thompson and Blaise Thompson; his nieces, Brianna Swann (Kevin) of Durham and April McLaurin of Durham; his nephew Logan McLaurin of Raleigh; his great-nephew Radford Swann; and also, Charles W. Taylor of Newport and Tracy D. Taylor of Newport.
