He was predeceased by: his parents, Olin Olis Abernethy and Nannie Caldwell Abernethy; his wife Betty Jean Smith Abernethy; and his daughter-in-law Nantahala "Nan" Abernethy. He is survived by: his children, Amy Greene (Scott) of Hickory, Carroll Abernethy (Susan) of Maiden and Donnie Abernethy of Maiden; his grandchildren, Sarah Greene, Samuel Greene (Amelia), Daniel Greene, Rachel Greene, Carter Vinson, Emory Vinson and Tatum Vinson; and his sister Mildred Beal of Lincolnton Numerous.
