He was predeceased by: his parents, John Thompson Chalmers and Carrie Bolt Chalmers; and his sisters, Joyce Ann C. Brooks and Mirian C. Smith. He is survived by: his wife Barbara Bell Chalmers; his children, John Scott Chalmers (Rhonda), Claudia Chalmers Hinson (Bobby), Sheila Chasteen Green and Mark Preston Chasteen (Lulane); his grandchildren, Christian, Abigail, Hannah, Ashlea, Alison, Summer, Lauren, Candace and Elyssa; his great grandchildren, Preston, Tanner, Kaden, Gabriel, Isaiah and Sam; and his siblings, Joseph Lomaneck Chalmers (Patricia), David Thompson Chalmers (Brenda) and June Chalmers Lee.
