He was predeceased by: his father Gaston Loye Penland Sr.; and his sister Gladys Penland. He is survived by: his mother Annie Hicks Penland; and his siblings, Frankie Penland, Willie Frye (Ralph), Beverly Essick, Margie Penland, James Penland (Kathie) and Rex Penland. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
