He was predeceased by: his parents, Emilia Cortez and Lupe Cortez; his siblings, Darlene Sapeda, Gloria Rivera, Rita Ayala, Rudy Frausto and Phil Cortez; and his uncles, Bonifacio Atencio and Anselmo Atencio.
He is survived by: his wife Darlene Smith Cortez; his children, Emilia Tammy Cortez-Janes (Benjamin) of Ramstein Germany, Gina Marie Shain (Jack) of Walsenburg Colorado and Derrick Jorcke (Megan) of Mesa Colorado; his siblings, Bertha Mosman-Gonzales of Denver Colorado, Theresa Romero (Ray) of Pueblo, Linda Maez of Pueblo, Richard Cortez (Vivian) of Denver Colorado and James Cortez (Anitria) of Denver Colorado; and his friend Arthur Medina (Cookie). He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
