He was predeceased by: his parents, Garnie Herring and Mildred Herring; his son-in-law John Harrington; his brother Garnie Herring, Jr.; his nephews, Corky Teachey, Chris Herring and Kyle Herring; and his great-niece Katherine Teachey.

He is survived by: his wife Jackie; his children, Jim Herring, Emily Harrington and Jo Lynn Herring; his grandchildren, Casie Creech (David), Josh Herring and Jake Harrington (Catie); his great grandchildren, Jack Creech, Benjamin Creech, Graham Creech and Johnathan Harrington; his brother Tommy Herring (Linda); his sister-in-law Judy Teachey (Karroll); his nephews, Mike Teachey, Jack Teachey, Mike Herring and Brian Herring; and his niece Betsy Melton.

Due to COVID, there will be a private service on Monday, January 4, 2020.
