He was predeceased by: his parents, Emmett Herndon and Beatrice Hill Herndon; and his siblings, George Eugene Herndon and ImoGene Hamilton. He is survived by: his wife Mildred Clark Herndon; his children, Gary Herndon of Conover, Robert Herndon of Claremont, Tina Cook (Rick) of Hudson and Kathy Grimsley of Kingsport, TN; his grandchildren, Chelsea Greene, Erika Holden, Cameron Herndon and Rhea Grimsley; and his great grandchildren, Vera Holden, McKenzie Greene, Jace Herndon and Lincoln Holden.
