She was predeceased by: her parents, Bascum LeRoy Pope and Rena Belle Hollar Pope; and her siblings, Sunny Pope (Kenneth), Ruby Reed, Josie Franks (Dean), Sudie "Tine" Lail (Vernon), Edith Sigmon, Mary Brice Pope and Ester Pope.

She is survived by: her husband Charlie Lee Abernathy; her daughter Jewel Deal (David) of Newton; her brother Buddy Pope (Crystal); and her grandchildren, Hayden Deal (Bailey Wright), McKenzie Deal, Cameron Abernathy and Melanie Abernathy.

Memorials may be made to Bethel Lutheran Church, 5759 Bolick Rd., Claremont, NC 28610.

“Always a smile, something humorous to say that left us laughing, enjoying life. As close friend of Carl (Goon) Pope, have always considered Brenda like an aunt because that's way she treated us. I can't recall her exact words -- we were maybe 16 & stupid but thought we knew everything -- but I do remember she always encouraged us. When I saw her obit, I could hear her voice, her laugh and want to send my love to my second family (Popes), who have always been there for me.”
