He was predeceased by: his parents, Ernest Lee Self and Laura Minnie Brittain Self; and his siblings, Michael Self, Gene Self, Coleen Boston and Merle Rhoney.
He is survived by: his wife Joyce Costner Self; his children, Bobby James Self (Kerrie) of Lawndale and Suzanne Self Benton (John) of Greensboro; his siblings, Coy Self, David Self, Farrell Self, Nell Baker, Joann Starnes, Judy Lovelace and Sandy Leatherman; his grandchildren, Alexander (Megan), Savannah, Bailey, Glen and Monica; and his great grandchild Blaire.
